There are multiple versions recorded of this song, which is more like a poem and was written by Leonard Cohen. But in my opinion no one does it as well as Emmylou Harris, I mean I can’t think of anyone better to sing this song.

The song is sung in poem form and you may want to listen a few times to catch all the lyrics and the story. Every time I listen to it though, in my mind I’m singing this out west, sitting around a campfire with my horse behind me in the dark, strumming my guitar and gazing into the flames… Eventually I’ll remember I can’t sing at all nor play guitar, and I’m in the midwest… but for now say a prayer for the cowgirl.
